PostSubject: Jaws DiscoVision CAV Laserdisc (FOUND!)   Thu May 05, 2011 2:17 am

I would love to get hold of the DiscoVision CAV version of Jaws as it was the first laserdisc available in the west.

I've never noticed one on ebay so I'm not sure how hard they are to get hold of.

I know the disc was reprinted for many years, if possible I'd like to get one of the earliest ones. I've heard the early ones came in boxes rather than sleeves, is there any other way to determine which printing the disc is?

I have also heard that the early DiscoVision discs were prone to rot, is the DiscoVision version of Jaws a particularly problematic disc?

Thanks for any info.

On LDDB, it seems like the CAV-edition is more common in most collections than the CLV-edition (doesn't mean it's more common in general though), but the CLV-version has some serious Laser Rot-reports while the CAV-version has no reported laser rots.

I know that this is quite uninteresting, but someone has uploaded the first five minutes of the LD and putted it up on Youtube. When it comes to the transfer itself, I thought it would look way worse than this but since I haven't seen it for real I cannot really tell how good the edition is. Just take a look.

Hi, thanks for the info.

I've seen that video before but it's quite unreliable as a source for quality as it is a digital rip of a BetaMax rip of the laserdisc...

I've been doing some more reading on DiscoVision in general and some people are saying that you can't play the discs on solid state laser players, only the gas ones (anything before the 80s).

Is this true?

Sounds very unreliable, though it was usual that the last "empty" side was like a sandpaper so they were completely unplayable on that side. Make sure you don't turn the wrong disc. Razz

I've now had it confirmed by a few people that due to the high levels of defects in a lot of DiscoVision titles that later players do indeed struggle to play them unless they're pretty much flawless.

I think I'll give up actively seeking this one, even though it would be great to own the first laserdisc, I would be disappointed that I wouldn't be able to play it.

Cheers for all the help : )

It's been some months since you posted this thread, but how has it gone? Yesterday I got this one in the mail.

Tried it out on my Pioneer CLD-D505 and there was no problem with the actual playback. The third side took some time to load and it had some mild rot at the beginning of the first side, but otherwise there was no drawbacks. I have to say that I'm very impressed of this edition for being such a good debut for this format, sure that the Signature Collection-edition is to prefer but that one was released 17 years later.

Good to know. I'm still keeping my eye open for a copy but not seen one for sale yet. Well done getting hold of one though : )
