MAY COMPETITION NO.2 Empty
PostSubject: MAY COMPETITION NO.2   MAY COMPETITION NO.2 EmptyMon May 09, 2011 3:01 am

First of all, congratulations to everyone who entered last week's cryptic competition. All submitted answers were correct so it can't have been that difficult, but if any of you were stumped, here are the answers:

1. Washington bounces back. (1991)....................... RICHOCHET which starred Denzel Washington

2. A woody worker meets a sly soldier. (1998).....................ANTZ in which Woody Allen voiced a worker ant and Sly Stallone voiced a soldier ant!

3. Blade that previously had a strange beery quality! (1981)....................EXCALIBUR (Ex + Kaliber!]

4. Herbert's Sands. (1984)..............................DUNE, the classic SF novel by Frank Herbert

5. I'm as mad as hell and I can't take ABC any more! (1976).......................NETWORK in which Peter Finch yelled something similar.

6. Steven's slave ship. (1997)........................AMISTAD, the eponymous vessel of Steven Spielberg's film

7. See a good man this afternoon, but literally in the morning. (1993)..................MATINEE which starred John Goodman

8. Mobsters now selling pizzas! (1990).......................GOODFELLAS, self-explanatory to pizza lovers

9. Service provided by UPS, TNT and DHL. (1972)..........................DELIVERANCE (my wife pedantically said this was wrong, but there is no movie called LATE DELIVERY, honest!)

10. The Woolf man becomes a woman in Florida. (1992)..........................ORLANDO from Virginia Woolf's novel in which a male from Elizabethan times 'jumps' through time and becomes a female, though not, of course, in Florida! (Funny that Universal Studios don't have a ride in their theme park inspired by this movie!)

This gives you the initial letters: R A E D N A M G D O which, when re-arranged, spells A R M A G E D D O N - the absolute end!

Well done to HIPPIEDALEK being the first to reply correctly, beating the second entry by a good 8 hours. If you let Admin know your choice of prize, it will be on its way to you.

Now, as they say, for something completely different.

I call this Competition 'String Theory'.

A string, or chain, of titles is where the last word of one title become the first word of the next title, and so on. Here's an example:

INDEPENDENCE DAY / DAY FOR NIGHT / NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD / DEAD MEN DON'T DIE / DIE HARD / HARD EIGHT / EIGHT MEN OUT / OUT OF THE BLUE / BLUE IN THE FACE / FACE-OFF / OFF AND RUNNING / RUNNING SCARED / SCARED TO DEATH / DEATH SHIP / SHIP OF FOOLS / FOOLS RUSH IN / IN PRAISE OF OLDER WOMEN / WOMEN IN LOVE / LOVE STORY / (The) STORY OF VERNON AND IRENE CASTLE / CASTLE ON THE HUDSON / HUDSON HAWK / HAWK THE SLAYER....

That's 23 titles so far. Can you start your own string, even longer? All titles must be proper films (TV shows can be included) and you can ignore the definite/indefinite articles (the/a/an).

You have 2 weeks to think of your list from the date of this posting, and a prize will go to the longest string!

Good luck!
