PostSubject: Godzilla DVDs   Fri Apr 15, 2011 5:06 am

I'm quite a fan of the Godzilla films, but here in the UK we've been a bit screwed over when it comes to DVD releases. All we've had is the original, King Kong Vs Godzilla and the American remake (shudder). That's it. Admittedly the UK version of the original kicks the crap out of the US DVD (and Blu-Ray in my opinion check out the comparison of Godzilla above Tokyo http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDReviews20/godzilla_dvd_review.htm, the US and Blu-Ray releases look horribly interlaced or aliased or something) but as far as selection goes we're pretty much forgotten about.

However I want to get hold of a few more of the films, namely:

Godzilla Vs King Ghidorah (1991)
Godzilla Vs Destroyah (1995)
Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001) (a mouthful to say but in my opinion the best of the series after the original)
Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2002)

By the looks of things the best releases are the original Japanese DVDs...but they have no English subtitles so I have to rule them out.
When it comes to US releases it looks like a pretty mixed bag. The picture on the whole is fine but some of them are non-anamorphic. On most of them the subtitles are actually subtitles of the English dub rather than proper translations of the Japanese.

So my question is: is there anyone else on the forum who has any of the Godzilla DVDs and what would you recommend. I want to get the best releases possible, if that means that I have to go with non-anamorphic and dubtitled then I guess I'll have to live with it, but I'd be annoyed with myself if I bought them then found out that a better version existed.

Thanks for any help.

Try this:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Godzilla-Collection-DVD-Region-NTSC/dp/B000VXWK86/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1304935877&sr=1-1

I own this set. It's a fabulous collection. It's quite inexpensive (now), and it is beautifully packaged and presented. The transfers are all sharp and you get both U.S. and original Japanese versions of every film. It still lacks a few titles for completists but then I would also recommend:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rodan-War-Gargantuas-Region-NTSC/dp/B001AR0D40/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1304936034&sr=1-1

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I've eyed that boxset up a few times as it looks great, but the problem is that it is all Showa era films, which is actually my least favourite era, though I know it is many people's favourite.

I've not seen Rodan but I've noticed that there is a copy of the film currently in the DinoDisc store so was tempted to pick it up, though it would be the dubbed version.

I just think it's a real shame that the Japanese boxset containing all 28 films didn't contain English subtitles otherwise I'd have to make space for one of these great sets:
