Some information about the editing of the cult classic The Keep.
The original film editing by director Michael Mann was approx 180 minutes long.
In the final released version edited by Paramount it was only 96 minutes long.
The 1983 original The KEEP was taken over by Paramount and heavily edited because of being over budget and keeping to a time limit this was
without Director Michael Manns permission, apparently he still hasnt forgiven the studio editing his original film and to this day will not talk about it.
Alternative endings shown on the tv version
An edited version that appeared on USA TV in 1989 had a scene where Glaeken is telling that it has been so long that he couldn't remember what he looked like anymore. That version ended with Glaeken alive at the bottom of the gorge, wounded after his battle with Molasar, crawling to the stream there and seeing his reflection.
Another TV version features a different ending where Glaeken is seen carrying the dead Molasar in his arms into the inner chamber of the keep.
Does the full film still exist? and if it does wouldnt it be great if it did get a release on dvd or blu ray.
does anyone know if the the full uncut version has ever been shown anywhere?
If you are a fan of the film the best option to get the full story is to read the book by Francis Paul Wilson which Iam yet to read , but even edited as heavily as it is it is still a great film.
